UAW, FORD, AND VISTEON
LAUNCH FAMILY SERVICE AND LEARNING CENTERS INITIATIVE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The UAW, Ford Motor Company, and Visteon today launched the Family Service and Learning Centers program, a nationwide effort to support workers in balancing the demands of work and home life, pursuing personal and professional goals, and contributing to their communities through volunteer efforts. A result of the 1999 UAW Ford national negotiations, the Family Service and Learning Centers program embodies the union theme, "Bargaining for Families. "The Family Service and Learning Centers build on the UAW's tradition of creatively using the collective bargaining process to pioneer innovative approaches to work-and-family issues." said UAW President Stephen P. Yokich. The Family Service and Learning Centers will offer a wide range of programs, services and resources to both UAW-represented workers and salaried employees at Ford and Visteon, their families, and retirees. Noting that the Family Service and Learning Centers program is the most comprehensive union-company program ever negotiated to support workers, Family Service and Learning Center programs and services will be offered at every Ford and Visteon location in the United States, but will vary depending on the size and needs of each population. Programs and services generally will fall into three categories: · Family Education and Services - These will include a broad range of family services, family and adult education programs, pre-teen and teen programs, and health and wellness programs. Examples of classes or services that may be offered range from parenting classes, before- and after-school programs, weight loss/fitness, home care and repair, summer and holiday camps, financial planning, intergenerational activities, and more. Early Childhood Education Services (Infant through kindergarten)-By September 2003, on-site child care centers will be opened at Centers in the 13 locations with the largest concentrations of Ford and Visteon workers: the greater Detroit metro area, Cleveland, Chicago, Louisville, and Kansas City. As determined by local need, these high- quality child care centers will be open up to 24 hours a day, 7 days aweek, and will offer back-up care and "get well care" for mildly ill children. In addition, Community Child Care Networks will be created to serve workers in all locations. Training and other support will be offered to local care providers through the Network to help improve the quality and accessibility of childcare throughout our communities. Community Service Education and Outreach - Each Center will have a Volunteer Support Network that will support activities to encourage community volunteerism and provide volunteer training, coordination, and other resources. The Networks will link up with local community groups to help volunteers get involved where they are most needed. The FSLC effort will bring services and programs to more than 30locations around the U.S. In areas with the largest concentration of UAW members and employees at Ford and Visteon. new, state-of-the-art centers will be built. There will be 13 of these centers built by September 2003 in five different areas of the country.
